Tracing my career journey though my blog

I was looking at my blog stats this morning and was really interested to see the geographical spread. I started writing my blog in 2011 and it has been read by 1.18m. I wanted to record all the technical tips I found and technology advancements which were useful to me and might be of use to help others. I started writing on SQL Server and the blog has migrated with me throughout my career through architecture, my PhD research and over the last few years I have been mostly writing on Data Governance, Microsoft Purview, AI Governance and Microsoft Fabric.

I asked Copilot to share some interesting thoughts about my journey for my blog and here is what it thought.

Your blog reveals a journey defined by intellectual curiosity, data‑driven leadership, and a distinctive narrative voice. Here are five evidence‑based, genuinely interesting aspects of that journey.

1. You frame data leadership as a process of unlearning, not just learning

Your post “What data leaders must unlearn to lead in the Age of AI” argues that modern leadership requires shedding outdated assumptions, such as believing governance slows innovation or that documentation equals understanding. This reframing positions you as a thought leader challenging entrenched industry norms.

2. You consistently connect research, industry practice, and philosophical curiosity

Your blog tagline “Chaos, complexity, curiosity and database systems” captures a rare blend: deep technical expertise paired with a reflective, almost philosophical lens on data systems. This fusion shapes your writing style and differentiates your professional voice.

3. You document the shift from AI experimentation to AI industrialisation with governance at the centre

In your coverage of the Gartner Data & Analytics Summit, you highlight how governance has moved from a compliance checkbox to the engine of AI ROI. This shows your role as an interpreter of industry change, translating large‑scale trends into practical insights for practitioners.

4. Your journey is grounded in both academic achievement and community leadership

Across external references, you are consistently described as a Microsoft Data Platform MVP, a PhD researcher recognised with the AOUG Will Swann Award, and a founder/organiser of Data Toboggan. This positions your blog as the narrative thread connecting your academic, professional, and community contributions.

5. Your posts reveal a long‑standing commitment to making governance practical, accessible, and embedded

Whether discussing AI oversight, lineage, behavioural metadata, or Purview governance models, your writing emphasises practical implementation over theory. You repeatedly advocate for governance that is embedded, automated, and literacy‑driven, showing a consistent philosophy across years of posts.

AI Is Making Us Dumber, Part III: When Models Learn Faster Than Organisations Do

We have reached a point where models can learn faster than organisations can adapt. This creates a dangerous asymmetry: the technology evolves, but the governance, culture, and literacy lag behind. The result is a widening gap between capability and control. Organisations deploy increasingly powerful models without fully understanding their behaviour, limitations, or risks.

This gap is not caused by technology, it is caused by organisational inertia. Many teams still rely on outdated governance processes that cannot keep pace with continuous learning systems. Policies are static, reviews are infrequent, and oversight is reactive. Meanwhile, models evolve with every new dataset, every retraining cycle, and every shift in user behaviour.

The solution is not to slow the models  but it is to accelerate organisational learning. Governance must become continuous, adaptive, and embedded into operational workflows. This means real‑time monitoring, dynamic policies, and stewardship that evolves alongside the data. It also means investing in literacy so that teams understand not just how to use AI, but how to question it.

When organisations learn as fast as their models, AI becomes a strategic advantage. When they don’t, AI becomes a liability. The choice is not technological, it is cultural.

I spoke on the topic at the  Data Toboggan Winter Edition in a session entitled 'Data Literacy: The Human Advantage in an AI World.'

Data Toboggan Winter Edition 2026

It is that time of year again when Data Toboggan is running another 12 hour conference with 3 tracks with speakers from around the world. There are some amazing sessions to learn from. The conference is free to attend as usual.

I am speaking on something of interest and topical in my lightning talk in The Chalet on Data Literacy: The Human Advantage in an AI World.

AI is accelerating decision‑making across organisations, but it’s also accelerating how quickly mistakes can scale. This session explores how data literacy keeps humans in the loop, prevents over‑reliance on AI, and strengthens judgment, context, and critical thinking. Attendees will see real examples of AI hallucinations, learn how provenance and triangulation protect against bad outputs, and understand why cognitive skills weaken when tasks are automated. They will leave with a practical checklist for questioning AI outputs, a clear view of the risks of low data literacy, and a framework for building teams that use AI responsibly, confidently, and intelligently.

We have our usual Piste Maps with the agenda.

Data Toboggan back stories

It was over 5 years ago we started planning the Data Toboggan event. It has been great to see the event grow 3x and we have changed with the technology growth. We will be opening CfS shortly for the next event anticipated to be 31 January 2025.

The second main event name was based on a film as it seemed fitting and fun.

Thank you for Support

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all those in the community who shared their condolence with us on the death of my mum and who celebrated the life of a remarkable person.

I particularly want to thank SQLBits for this year for making The SQLBits 2025 Charity, the main charity for the event with donations going to The National Museum of Computing

The National Museum of Computing is also a fantastic visitor attraction, recognised as one of England’s top 100 ‘irreplaceable places’, allowing visitors to follow the development of computing from the ultra-secret pioneering efforts of the 1940s, through the large systems and mainframes of the 1950s-70s, to the rise of personal computing in the 1980s and beyond. The museum hosts lots of events throughout the year and does not receive government or Heritage Lottery Funding. I feel it is important to preserve the past and help the museum with some ambitious projects in the future. If you missed the opportunity to donate there is a direct page where you can make donations

I would also like to thank the #MVPCommunity and the team at #DataToboggan for there tremendous support during this time. #MVPBuzz

You can read more about my mum, Joan Frances Holt here

Thank you again my #sqlfamily #datafamily

That's a Wrap Data Toboggan Cool Runnings 2024

Data Toboggan Cool Runnings 2024 ran 13 July 2024. We ran our largest event error since inception in 2020. We were so pleased to be able to have 3 full tracks of sessions from speakers all round the world. The event ran for 12 hours, starting with presenters from Australia, through India, Europe, Scandinavia, UK and finishing in the USA. It was our largest event with over 400 attendees. It is our principle to never close registration until after event finishes, so the event is open.to register and join all day. It is the people who make the event, the speakers, the attendees, and helpers. The organising team had loads of fun putting the event together.

We hold 3 events a year.

  • Data Toboggan - Winter Edition (full conference | end of Jan)
  • Data Toboggan - Cool Runnings (full conference | beginning July)
  • Data Toboggan - Alpine Coaster  (unconference real world short talks | early November)

We also have a user group that meets from time to time when there are interesting areas to cover called Data Toboggan - Slide Preparation.

The virtual event started covering Azure Synapse Analytics when it was launched and with the introduction of Microsoft Fabric we have grown with technology innovation and now cover Microsoft Fabric, Synapse, Data Engineering, Data warehousing, and Analysis. We have a track with Microsoft Purview and AI connected elements as well.

We look forward to seeing you all at the next event.
