Microsoft AI Tour London 2024

The Microsoft AI Tour in London on 21 October 2024 talked about solving the biggest challenges and uncovering new opportunities to empower your organization. The Opening Keynote was with Clare Barclay, Satya Nadella and Jared Spataro.  There were discussions on building an agentic world where  personal agents, organisational agents, business process agents and cross organisation agents enable the use of AI in business to assist you with work. An example of this is Pages for AI artifacts that enables you to work with the organisation and AI . The 3 areas of innovations

  • Copilot
  • Copilot & AI Stack
  • Copilot devices

These innovative areas will increase value and reduce waste and Copilot Studio for autonomous agents was announced.

A very important announcement, for us in the UK, is that Microsoft and UK Government have signed a five-year agreement to support the new era of digital transformation. So a very exciting time for the UK to grow.

There is gravity with data. AI needs to bring all the data together in one platform like Microsoft Fabric, to simplify data and have App servers, AI apps and tools. Microsoft showed its unified data offering in IaaS, PaaS and SaaS to unify the data estate, at what ever stage a business is at, for databases and analytics.

Trust is the most important thing in #AI. You must have a set of principles considering Security, Privacy, Safety at the core

AI is redefining Britain. It can take longer to realise value as change and adoption management takes time. It is cheaper to innovate than before so we need to think big, think bold and be ambitious

Satya finished with 4 important points to note: expand opportunity, earn trust, protect fundamental rights and advance sustainability.

The announcement today can be read here

Copilot Different Experiences

Adopt, extend and build Copilot experiences across the Microsoft Cloud.  Copilot uses Large Language Models (LLMs) . There are various level of expertise and effort required for each type. As with each type they connect to different data sources and require different level of customisations.

A few terms

Temperature - This controls how conservative or adventurous Copilot should be. The higher the temperature, the more adventurous Token – when text is processed in large AI model, it is divided into the smallest units, these are called tokens. So tokens are the finest granularity in natural language progressing for these large language models

Prompt - The text you send to Azure OpenAI Service as an API call. This text is then input into the AI model. Metaprompts – part of the orchestration layer. A set of instructions that are passed to copilot that are sent to the model on every turn of conversation and where safety tuning happens.

The art and science of prompting in Copilot for Microsoft 365

Prompt engineering has recently sprung up. It is how you ask a Copilot to do something.  It is like summarizing and explaining what to do. Microsoft have created a set of resources to guide you through the art and science of it.

The full guide on the art and science of prompting. There are useful featured prompts for generating ideas, help me write an email etc.

The Prompting do's and don't can be found here.

Microsoft Inspire 2023 keynote

We are in the middle of a massive platform shift with AI . Two areas Natural Language the developer interface and the Reasoning Engine give more power together with Information Management as we digitise the world. Generative AI together with Microsoft Fabric will be transformative.

Five of the key announcements Satya highlighted

  • Bing Chat Enterprise will probably be the biggest generative AI launch this year. I like the ability to  do SWAT analysis by just asking. The private AI powered chat enables confidential data, user data, conversations and chat activity to stay private an not used to train AI models
  • Sales Copilot
  • Power Automate Process Mining  is Generally Available
  • Microsoft loves OpenAI. The Azure OpenAI Service has regional expansion
  • Meta's Llama 2 on Azure and Windows
  • Microsoft AI Cloud Partner Program new incentives

There were discussion on how the model effectiveness is the currency of content safety and how prompt engineering with its phrases and symbols was important. All generative AI services are going to change everything.

The Inspire keynote 18 July used an analogy of rooms in the house to describe the various layers of the Microsoft stack services.  The Copilot stack was discussed with a way to enable AI transformation.

With this amazing era of AI we need to understanding how to provide that duty of care and ethical advisory. It is more paramount than ever think about data provenance, bias amplification, regulatory compliance and explainability.
